The NL Public Record

What happened in court

Every adult criminal case completed in a Newfoundland and Labrador court, by the most serious offence it carried and how it ended. The figures are Statistics Canada's, shown as filed, from a different survey than the police-reported crime on the first page.

How cases ended

Each completed case ends one way: a guilty finding, an acquittal, a stay or withdrawal, or another decision. The shares below are of every case completed in the latest court year; the table underneath runs the whole series.

What happened in court, 2024/2025

3,724 adult criminal court cases were completed in Newfoundland and Labrador under all offences, and 2,007 of them, 54 per cent, ended in a guilty finding.

Stayed or withdrawn1,645 1,645 44%

These are not the incidents above. A court case is counted under the most serious offence it contains, so one case can cover several charges. The court year runs April to March, and the cases completed in it mostly began with charges laid in earlier years. The survey covers adults only; anyone under eighteen at the time of the offence is dealt with in youth court and does not appear here.

Every offence

One row per offence as the survey publishes it, for the latest court year, with the run of cases completed since 1999/2000 at the right. Two offences, motor vehicle theft and offences in relation to sexual services, are only published from 2012/2013; the earlier years are blank as filed. Prostitution offences were repealed in 2014 and the series ends there.

What to know about these figures

Court outcomes come from the Integrated Criminal Court Survey, a census of completed cases in adult criminal courts. A case is counted once, under the most serious offence it carried, so one case can cover several charges. The court year runs April to March, and the cases completed in a year mostly began with charges laid in earlier years. Anyone under eighteen at the time of the offence is dealt with in youth court and does not appear here.

Guilty, acquitted, and stayed or withdrawn do not add up to the total. The remainder are other decisions, such as a finding of not criminally responsible or a transfer, which the table publishes as a single residual and this page shows as the gap.

These figures and the police-reported figures on the first page come from two different surveys and cannot be read against each other case for case: an incident reported in one year may be completed in court years later, or never charged at all.

Reviewed before it appears.
